care will be…

  • Personalized

An intake session will help Dr. Marken understand you, your current needs, and how he may be helpful. After the session, Dr. Marken will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan.

  • Comprehensive

Wellness incorporates many aspects of you - mental health, physical health, relationships, self-narrative, life circumstances, to name but a few. Dr. Marken will work to consider these different aspects when working with you.

  • Collaborative

You will always be an active member of your treatment and treatment decisions. Your preferences and engagement in your care are essential to the work.

What can I expect?

Reaching out to a mental health provider can be intimidating, in part because it is difficult to know how it will be until you try it. An initial assessment will involve Dr. Marken asking you questions about your life including why you are seeking treatment, your mental health history, and your medical history. At the end of this session, you and Dr. Marken will discuss the appropriate treatment from there, whether it be therapy, medication, both, neither, or a referral to another provider.

The following is the general structure of what treatment typically looks like. This can be tailored to your individual needs and preferences.

  • Comprehensive Initial Assessment (Adult): One 60-minute session

  • Comprehensive Initial Assessment (Child/Teen):

    • One 45-60-minute session with parents/guardians

    • One 45-60-minute session with child/teen, ending with a review with everyone

  • Therapy (Individual/Family/Couples): Once or twice weekly for 45 minutes.

  • Medication Management: Once or twice monthly.

*An initial assessment does not necessarily guarantee continued sessions. After the initial assessment, the treatment plan developed may involve referrals to more specialized care depending on the situation.

Virtual vs. in-person

The pandemic led to many changes in psychiatry, and perhaps the biggest change was the way care quickly shifted from almost entirely in-person to largely virtual. There are benefits and downsides to both, and it is ultimately up to you to determine which option you prefer.

At present, Dr. Marken is predominantly seeing patients virtually and occasionally seeing patients for in-person sessions.

Laws about care delivery are changing quickly and differ state-by-state, thus Dr. Marken would work with you to develop a plan that is best for you and follows state regulations.
